Two Smokies Thrifting Events

What’s the old saying, someone else’s trash is another’s treasure? Or maybe you just love the idea of repurposing a before loved item into something new for you. If you are into thrifting, a seller or just love to collect vintage or antiques, the Smokies has two great events to keep any avid buyer busy. Dixie Gas, located off of Newport Highway, and the Sevier County Fairgrounds, both located in Sevierville.

Although the normal draws to this area are the big attractions, there is something fun about unique shopping experiences that send us home with a story about our purchase or the place where the unique item was purchased. It can make the entire trip even more memorable.

Thrifting for vintage or antiques or both?

How can you tell the difference between a antique or a vintage item? The main difference between antique and vintage is age. If an item is 100 years or older they are considered antiques, and in many cases depending style, can even be assigned to specific eras. These are usually not replicas but the real deal.

Vintage is less than 100 years old but old enough to feel like they’re from a different period. Some vintage items can even be as young as 20 (hello 2004, we’re talking to you). Vintage items are usually recreated. They are also more reflective of cultural trends from more recent decades thus making them more appealing to collectors.

Sevier County hosts a couple of events in the Fall that are a worthwhile addition to any thrift shopper’s itinerary.

Dixie Gas

Dixie Gas was founded in 1989 and has held it current location, at 3905 Newport Highway in Sevierville since 1994. Chip Flohe, along with his family, began hosting seasonal shows throughout the year and it’s a tradition that is still going strong today.

Dixie Gas’ Fall Show will showcase oil and gas collectibles, antique toys, pedal cars, license plates, and automobile memorabilia and will be held September 5-7.  It’s a collector’s dream.

Dixie Gas is the largest show of its kind held in the Southeast and also boasts one of the area’s largest antique shops on the property – Chip’s Antiques. And while you’re at Dixie Gas be sure to stop by Happy’s Toy Trains, which has a toy train museum, something any kid (or kid at heart) can enjoy.

But that’s September, what about October

The Sevier County Fairgrounds Community Sale

The Sevier County Fairgrounds hosts one of the areas largest community sales events in October. The Fairgrounds are located off of Highway 66 in Sevierville and make the ideal location for this event.

Mark your calendars for October 18-19 and from 10am to 4pm you can peruse crafts, antiques, collectible, yard sale items and direct-sales items.

Over 20 vendors will assemble for this primarily indoor event. Rain or shine it’s sure to be a good time with lots of things to see and buy.

Other than the easy to find location, the event also boasts FREE admission and FREE parking with food trucks available for those in between purchases snacks.
